The Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL) is the main trade association for credit unions in Britain, representing credit unions to governments, policy makers and the media. ABCUL provides a full range of information, training and development services to help its members grow as sustainable financial services providers.
What is a Credit Union?
Credit unions are member-owned, not-for-profit cooperatives that generally offer lower fees, better interest rates on loans, and higher savings returns compared to traditional banks. They are ideal for community-focused, ethical banking, often helping those with lower credit scores and providing personalised service.
Financial Co-Op
A credit union is a financial co-operative which provides savings, loans and a range of services to its members. It is owned and controlled by the members.
Customer Owned
Credit Unions are owned by the people who use their services, not by external shareholders or investors.
Member Led
Each member has one vote and volunteer directors are elected from the membership, by the membership. The aim it to provide the best service to members – not maximising profits.
